Castlebar Town Council

Four group water schemes in County Mayo are non compliant with regulations according to Mr Joe Beirne, Director of Services and Senior Engineer for Mayo County Council.

Lack of funding is delaying water and sewerage schemes being developed in the county, members of the Water and Sewage SPC were informed last week.

The elected members of Castlebar Town Council, gave a warm welcome to the news that €1.8 million will be spent by the Town Council on the new town park. The meeting was shown initial draft drawings for the new town park which were put together by Padraig Kelly, executive architect for the Town Council.These drawings allowed for the creation of a public green space, walkways, a public paved area, a full size GAA and a full size soccer pitch. Town Manager Seamus Granahan told the members that the council had got approval from the Government to spend €1.8 million which has come from internal receipts from the sale of local authority housing and from a the planned maintenance programme. Mr Granahan went on to say that this represented a great opportunity for the town to put in a high-quality public space near the centre of the town for all the people to enjoy.

Fine Gael’s high hopes of Castlebar dominance

Fine Gael has selected a four man ticket to contest the seven seats in the newly expanded Castlebar electoral area in the Mayo County Council elections this June. The incumbent councillors Henry Kenny and Cyril Burke will be joined on the ticket by Castlebar Town Councillor Eugene McCormack and Mayor Kevin Guthrie.

Castlebar Town Council was returned to its quota of nine councillors at last week’s monthly meeting of the local authority. Labour’s Harry Barrett and Sinn Féin’s Therese Ruane were co-opted on to the council in place of Johnny Mee and Noel Campbell respectively.

The issue of uncontrolled pedestrian crossings in Castlebar was raised again at the monthly meeting of Castlebar Town Council. Cllr Michael Kilcoyne brought up the issue telling the meeting: “In relation to the report we got on pedestrian crossings last month, there are very clear regulations as to what are pedestrian crossings and none of which are listed comply with that. I propose that we get the road safety officer for Mayo County Council to make a report on these crossings and let him decide if they are safe.”
